Perdido Key is a barrier island along the Gulf Coast, stretching across Alabama and Florida. The eastern six miles of the island is Perdido Key State Park, remaining in its natural state of white sand beaches and dunes covered with sea oats. The ruins of Fort McRee are the only non-natural thing in the park. Originally built during the Civil War, then built again for World War II, Fort McRee never saw any action. A lagoon, perfect for anchoring, is formed between the east end of Perdido Key and a spoil island.
